What is an e-Portfolio?
A portfolio is a means to organize and display your personal and professional accomplishments. In your case, an electronic portfolio (e-portfolio) functions as a personalized website where those you share it with can view your work. Each student's e-portfolio is housed within the Upper Iowa University learning management system uiuLearn, which allows you to build your site as you progress through the nursing program. The e-portfolio is secured and remains private until you choose to share it with others.
Why do we need to do it?
The Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON) requires all approved programs to document student achievement of all program outcomes in a summative evaluation (IAC 655 ch 2, 2.10(4)). A portfolio shall serve as the summative evaluation and direct evidence of student achievement of individual program outcomes. Successful completion of a portfolio is a course requirement for NUR 455: Capstone II. If a student does not complete the portfolio, a passing grade for the course cannot be issued.
How is the e-portfolio graded?
Your faculty advisor will follow your progress and evaluate your portfolio at certain milestones throughout your program. At each milestone, your faculty advisor will provide feedback on your portfolio contents. No letter grade is issued as the portfolio is considered on a "pass" or "fail" basis. As you complete each core nursing course, you will be required to reflect on your learning. If you do not complete this step, your final grade will be listed as "incomplete" and you will be unable to progress to your next course.
